about

In the early 1970s, when jazz was taking on electric and exotic colors in its fusion incarnation and the bossa nova was being similarly stretched into a style called MPB (música popular brasileira), Flora Purim and her husband Airto Moreira represented a particularly comprehensive conjunction of new musical ideas. Purim’s performance at the 1974 Montreux Jazz Festival, heard here in all of its spontaneous excitement, is indicative of what resulted from such creative ferment. With a band that includes jazz giant Ron Carter as well as Brazilian masters Wagner Tiso and Robertinho Silva, the singer finds fertile material for her incredible range and quicksilver imagination in the music of former employers Hermeto Pascoal and Chick Corea; honors her homeland’s musical past with an Ary Barroso classic; and soars on a memorable version of "Cravo e Canela" with composer and special guest Milton Nascimento.
